How to be Creative

Creativity is not just for artists. Everyone has a creative side whether they see it or not.

In artists, it’s more obvious because their creativity is seen in the works they produce or in the performance they showcase.

In other people who don’t fit the artist stereotype, creativity is used in different forms.

For example, in lawyers, their creativity is manifested through their use of logic. Yes, they deduce from facts, from observations, from statements, but they need to find different angles or different ways to present those facts in order to deliver their side of the story.

For people in banking or the financial trade, their creativity can be seen in the way they trade stocks or know when to invest and where. Though these might seem more of the use of logic, it’s accompanied by creative strategy.

So it’s safe to say that we use creativity in our daily living. Housewives get creative with their meal plans, moms get all sorts of creative (and competitive) on parenting, taxi drivers get creative with their routes, and so on and so forth.

This is why it’s important for everyone to engage in creativity-boosting activities and habits. Here are a few of those you can try to practice every day.

#1. Observe

There are so many things happening around you wherever you go. Look at the sights, listen to the sounds, appreciate the sensory experience.

When you observe the things that go on in your environment, you get ideas. You take what you see, hear, and smell and put it together with your own experience or knowledge and you create a new idea out of it.

Seeing different things spark your creative side because you take the new and blend it with something of your own.

#2. Choose the right circles

They say birds of a feather flock together, true, but it shouldn’t always be the case. Opt to have certain circles that cultivate a different side of you.

If you’re an introvert, find friends who’ll bring out the extrovert in you. Like bring you to concerts, parties, social gatherings that you otherwise wouldn’t be privy to.

This is how you expand your knowledge and add to your experiences. If you’re always hanging out with like-minded people, the chance for growth is lessened.

Find people you admire, like those who are successful entrepreneurs and learn from them. It’s not just books and articles that will teach you how to attain success.

#3. Internalize

In your experiences, not all of them will resonate with you. But those that do, deserve a little more reflection time.

It’s important that you reflect on why a certain thing, person, or experience moved you. There’s always a deeper reason why things affect you, and you have to know what it is to maximize its potential to move you to create something out of that emotion, that passion.

Also, when you’re moved by something, chances are, this also moves other people. And whatever it is that you’ll create, should more or less have that impact on them as well. This is how good things go ‘viral’.

#4. Be patient

It’s not every day that you’re going to come up with very creative things. It takes practice to really enhance your skillset as well. You need to develop that virtue in you because it’s going to affect your whole process.

Inspiration is not something that you can force. It’s something that just strikes you. Be patient in waiting for it to come around.
