Cliches vs Cliches

Everyone has something to say. Most of the time, it’s nothing new. We’ve heard thousands of these wise words, these sage advice, these food for thought.

In a world with so many gifted speakers, writers, and every day poets of this time and the ones before, words can’t help but get pushed and pulled in different directions.

Also, because everyone’s experiences are different from each other, there tends to be different lessons learned. You can chalk this up to different beliefs, ideologies, etc etc.

Because there’s so many, I wanted to share my two cents about some of these cliches and attempt to shine a light on the seeming contradictions they pose.

“Leave it to fate” vs. “You make your own destiny”

So which one do we follow? What do we do?

Well, it’s true, you do make your own destiny. You have the ability to forge your own path, to make decisions for yourself.

You have free will and are able to choose what you want to do. You can have goals, dreams, and find your own way towards those things.

There is no predestination in terms of having no choice in these matters.

When they say leave it to fate, it doesn’t mean you just stand idly there, waiting for something to just drop at your feet.

It means the factors that are out of your control, those that may affect your plans, are not elements you should worry yourself with.

You leave those to fate and if your plans align with how the uncontrollable elements line up or vice versa, then lucky you.

If somehow the variables form hurdles to get to your goals, it just means there’s a different way, or sometimes, that it’s steering you towards a different path, a different goal you might not know you want yet.

“Don’t settle for anything” vs. “Learn to be content”

It’s tricky to balance what we need and what we want.

When people say you have to be content with what you have, it means that you are still luckier than others.

Don’t be ungrateful for the things that are given to you.

If you are part of the few who actually have what they need, then be content with those, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop there.

Having what you need covered may actually be your ticket to go after what you want without fear of failing.

“Happiness is out there, you just need to find it” vs. “Happiness is within”

Before you find what can add to your happiness (the ones out there), you need to first find it in yourself.

It’s true that happiness begins in yourself. You can never be truly happy if your happiness relies on external things like other people, gadgets, cars, etc.

Your happiness has to be founded in what is intrinsically you. The other things, the ones that are transient, only add to what already is within.

Cliches exist because they are true, but don’t confuse yourself with all that’s out there. Ultimately, you believe what you believe according to who you are and what works for you.

The point is that you keep moving forward in life. Don’t get stuck waiting.
