“Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom.”
– The Buddha (Dhammapada, verse 282)

For thousands of years, people have practiced various forms of meditations. What is common to all of them is that the main accent is on the meditator’s inward journey.

It’s about becoming the TRUE YOU. You become one with your practice of meditation. You are the meditation. You are the path.

By making the meditation part of your daily routine, you can experience many physical, emotional, mental and other benefits. So, here are 7 hugely positive benefits of meditation you can get on your unique path.

1. Evolving from Addictive to Conscious Living

In the modern world it may seem to us that everyone is addicted to something: gambling, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, approval, adrenalin, attention, work and so on. However, most of us are addicted to thinking – the seemingly never-ending roller coaster of unproductive thoughts.

The way we turn loose of these negative and unproductive thought patterns is through the regular practice of meditation. The proof for the previously mentioned idea is the Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program study.

This 8-week intensive course of the mindfulness meditation program included the daily 45 minutes of several exercises such as focusing on breathing and other sensations, body scans and the basic hatha yoga postures.

While the participants were focused on the present moment or the breath, fMRI or functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that the mind’s chatter ceased and the associated brain network, the task-positive network (TPN) was activated.

On the other hand, the default mode network (DMN) that is associated with the negative self-talk, repetitive thought patterns, daydreaming was deactivated.

So, if you want to come up with the great plans, decisions, solutions and aha moments, engage more your TPN brain network and enjoy the process!

2. Getting the Distractions Out Of The Way: Developing the Better Concentration and Focus

During the focused attention meditation, the practitioners focus their attention on a single internal or external object. This object can be the specific part of the body, the breath, a sound, black dot, candle flame, mental image etc.

As the practitioners keep focusing, the distracting thoughts, images or sensations gradually disappear while the deep serenity arises within. In this way, the practitioners develop ‘the meditation muscle’ by applying it in their everyday lives as well.

In the situations when the distractions appear, they can easily bring the attention back to their task and be fully concentrated on it.

3.Improving the Immune System, Energy Levels and Shifting the Gene Expressions

The researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the University of California, San Francisco, and Harvard Medical School revealed us the positive short- and long-term effects of the meditation and vacation 1-week retreat on three groups of women: vacation, novice and regular meditators.

The scientists examined the mentioned effects on the participants at the following periods: before the retreat, directly after it, one month, and 10 months later. The meditation program consisted of mantra meditation, yoga, and self-reflection exercises that were created by Deepak Chopra, MD.

All the participants experienced the improvement in their well-being, mood, and energy levels. Also, the results showed the shifts in the genes linked to stress and immune system.

The regular meditators had the shifts in their gene expression linked to antiviral activity and the protein and enzyme activity linked to healthier aging. The study showed the shifts in the better ratio of the proteins associated with dementia and depression.

So, when we meditate we alter ourselves at the most profound levels.

4. Anchoring to the Present Moment

What is on the other side of fear? How can we achieve it?

When we are fully immersed in the present moment, observing everything as it is without making stories and judgments about it, we are accepting everything as it is and letting go.

In other words, we are meditating. The fear and anxiety dissolve in the Now. The only reality is the Now.

5. Seeing the Bigger Picture

As we keep practicing the meditation, our awareness expands as well. We see the multiple aspects and dimensions of the situations we’re in. We understand better our emotions, thoughts, feelings, sensations, actions and anything else that comes to us.

In this way, we choose what we want to cultivate within ourselves and know how it affects us and the world around us. We see the bigger picture.

6. Learning to Respond, Not React

By meditating we are looking into ourselves and bringing to light our subconscious beliefs. We are learning about our responses and consequently transforming ourselves deeply.

No longer do we react to events with the emotional havoc or past limiting thought patterns. On the contrary, we consciously respond to them.

7. Unleashing Your Powers and Abilities

The more we consciously and fully live, the more we are connected to everything else. Then, each and every moment is the oneness, universal love, the space of all possibilities.

There is nothing to be attained outside of ourselves because everything we want to attain is already within us. By connecting to who we really are, we are sharing our uniqueness with the world. By allowing our creative energy to flow in the present moment, we are serving the humanity.

Meditation is the key to developing our powers and abilities. Meditation is the process of our growth.
By exploring our unique path of meditation, we are gaining many benefits while at the same time sharing our gifts and talents with the world.

The sparkles of our inner light spread and shine throughout the Universe and beyond. Here and Now.
